چکیده

We study variants and generalizations of the problem of finding an r-regular subgraph (where r ≥ 3) in a given graph by deleting at most k vertices. Moser and Thilikos (2006) have shown that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) if parameterized by (k, r). They asked whether the problem remains fixed-parameter tractable if parameterized by k alone. We answer this question negatively: we show that if parameterized by k alone the problem is W [1]-hard and therefore very unlikely fixed-parameter tractable. We also give W [1]-hardness results for variants of the problem where the parameter is the number of vertex and edge deletions allowed, and for a new generalized form of the problem where the obtained subgraph is not necessarily regular but its vertices have certain prescribed degrees. Following this we demonstrate fixed-parameter tractability for the considered problems if the parameter includes the regularity r or an upper bound on the prescribed degrees in the generalized form of the problem. These FPT results are obtained via kernelization, so also provide a practical approach to the problems presented.

Tight Complexity Bounds for FPT Subgraph Problems Parameterized by Clique-Width

We give tight algorithmic lower and upper bounds for some double-parameterized subgraph problems when the clique-width of the input graph is one of the parameters. Let G be an arbitrary input graph on n vertices with clique-width at most w. We prove the following results. – The Dense (Sparse) k-Subgraph problem, which asks whether there exists an induced subgraph of G with k vertices and at lea...

Parameterized Complexity of Finding Regular Induced Subgraphs

The r-Regular Induced Subgraph problem asks, given a graph G and a non-negative integer k, whether G contains an r-regular induced subgraph of size at least k, that is, an induced subgraph in which every vertex has degree exactly r. In this paper we examine its parameterization k-Size r-Regular Induced Subgraph with k as parameter and prove that it is W [1]-hard. We also examine the parameteriz...

Parameterized Complexity of Connected Even/Odd Subgraph Problems

Cai and Yang initiated the systematic parameterized complexity study of the following set of problems around Eulerian graphs. For a given graph G and integer k, the task is to decide if G contains a (connected) subgraph with k vertices (edges) with all vertices of even (odd) degrees. They succeed to establish the parameterized complexity of all cases except two, when we ask about a connected k-...

Graph editing problems with extended regularity constraints

Graph editing problems offer an interesting perspective on suband supergraph identification problems for a large variety of target properties. They have also attracted significant attention in recent years, particularly in the area of parameterized complexity as the problems have rich parameter ecologies. In this paper we examine generalisations of the notion of editing a graph to obtain a regu...

Parameterized complexity of finding small degree-constrained subgraphs

In this article we study the parameterized complexity of problems consisting in finding degree-constrained subgraphs, taking as the parameter the number of vertices of the desired subgraph. Namely, given two positive integers d and k, we study the problem of finding a d-regular (induced or not) subgraph with at most k vertices and the problem of finding a subgraph with at most k vertices and of...
